How was Pope Leo’s first year?

What direction do you hope to see the church take under Pope Leo XIV’s leadership? Let us know how he’s doing so far in this month’s survey.
In the Pews

May 8, 2026, will mark one full year since the election of Pope Leo XIV, following the death of Pope Francis in April 2025. From his earliest appointments to key Vatican offices and bishops’ sees to his first encyclical and public statements, Leo has slowly begun to establish his own vision for the church’s future. Some see continuity with Francis’ emphasis on synodality, mercy, and care for the marginalized, while others detect subtle shifts in tone and priorities.

As Catholics around the world assess this new pontificate and what lasting impact it might have on the church’s relationship with the modern world, we want to hear from the people who experience these changes most directly. That’s why we’re asking you, the Catholics in the pews, to share your perspective on this latest chapter in the church’s history.

What has been your impression of Pope Leo in the past year?

How do you think his papacy compares to Pope Francis’?
