Who publishes U.S. Catholic?
U.S. Catholic is published by the Claretian Missionaries of the USA-Canada province. The Claretians are a global Roman Catholic congregation of priests and brothers who tend to the religious and pastoral needs of vulnerable communities. Rooted in prayer, Claretians uplift the dignity of all people, especially those who feel overlooked or forgotten.
How long has U.S. Catholic been publishing?
U.S. Catholic has been published for more than 90 years. In 1935, the first edition of the magazine was titled The Voice of St. Jude. In 1963, during the Second Vatican Council, the magazine changed its name to U.S. Catholic. In 1995, we went digital and launched this dynamic website.

What does “lay-led Catholic journalism” mean?
Being lay-led means our editorial team is primarily made up of people who are active in the church but have not taken religious vows. Many Catholic media organizations, especially those published by a religious order, are led primarily by clergy or religious communities.
U.S. Catholic is unique. We believe the experiences and wisdom of ordinary Catholics are essential to understanding the life of the church. Our coverage reflects the perspectives of people raising families, working jobs, participating in parish life, and seeking to live out their faith in an increasingly complex world.
Does U.S. Catholic represent the official position of the Catholic Church or the Claretians?
No. U.S. Catholic does not issue authoritative teachings but rather strives to foster informed conversation, thoughtful reflection, and faithful engagement with the questions facing Catholics today.
U.S. Catholic is published by the Claretian Missionaries and we operate within the Catholic tradition and with ecclesial approval to publish. We are not affiliated with the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops nor do we speak on behalf of any diocese, parish, or church authority.
Is U.S. Catholic a liberal or conservative publication?
Neither. We welcome readers across the ideological spectrum who are looking for thoughtful, faithful engagement rather than partisan rhetoric. Our editorial framework is based in Catholic social teaching. As a result, we are not interested in fitting into political labels and more interested in exploring what Catholic faith asks of us in the world today.
What is U.S. Catholic’s perspective on contested issues in the church?
We believe disagreement is part of a healthy Catholic tradition. Our goal is pastoral; to speak to everyday people in the pews who are wrestling with these topics, to model disagreement in community, and to assure all Catholics that they are not alone in the church.

What awards has U.S. Catholic received?
In 2026, the Catholic Media Association awarded U.S. Catholic first place in the Best National General Interest Magazine category for the fifth year in a row. Our Glad You Asked podcast also received first place for Best Social Justice Podcast. And we earned more awards in scriptural interpretation, illustration, and our coverage of immigration.
U.S. Catholic also received multiple Awards of Excellence from the Associated Church Press in 2026, including the James Solheim Award for Editorial Courage.
