Blessed Daudi Okelo and Blessed Jildo Irwa

Born: 1902 and 1906

Died: October 1918

Feast Day: September 15

Daudi and Jildo were two young catechists from the Acholi tribe in Uganda in the early 20th century. Their work as catechists involved far more than simply offering classes after Mass on Sunday. For these two young men, being a catechist was a rigorous and sometimes dangerous vocation. Their ministry required them to travel significant distances and engage with potentially hostile local peoples at a time of political upheaval and uncertainty. Threats they faced in their travels included thieves, gangs, a slave trade, and oppressive British colonizers. Especially noteworthy about their bravery was their youth: Daudi was a teenager, and Jildo was a preteen. Although they were diligent and peaceful, some religious extremists were interested in eradicating the perceived competition. When Daudi and Jildo refused to cease their catechesis, they were attacked and pierced to death with spears. Their witness can inspire us not only to be faithful to the gospel, but also to stand as ambassadors of peace in turbulent situations.
