Pier Giorgio Frassati
Born: April 6, 1901
Died: July 4, 1925
Feast Day: July 4
Patron of: students, young people, mountaineers and skiers, World Youth Day
Pier Giorgio was a vibrant young man who lived a life of energetic faith. He was incredibly involved with groups for students and youth, and even established a newspaper based on Rerum Novarum (On Capital and Labor)—staying in the family business, as his family owned La Stampa newspaper.
Pier Giorgio was dedicated to social reform, and though his family was very wealthy, he was personally austere and often gave away what he had to those in greatest need. He faced down police violence and fascism due to his commitment to social justice. While Pier Giorgio was active in his faith and community, he also enjoyed passions such as mountain climbing, where he felt close to God. He died at a young age of a viral disease, and his cause for canonization was quickly championed by the many members of his community who witnessed his passion and faith.
Even now, organizations and ministries that serve young people identify Frassati as their patron. In a time where young people do not always feel welcomed and seen in our church, Frassati can be a prophetic witness to the profound impact that young people can have on their communities and our church.
