AND now it’s June. If you’re anything like me this has come as a complete shock and surprise as you’re suddenly required to turn your calendars from March to June. (Personally, I thought there a couple of other months in there.) If you are not like me, and you are completely on top of everything, bully for you.
But if you are like me, you may have missed a few things this week. So this is your weekly roundup.
First, in the terrible, awful, no-words-can-adequately-convey-it news, there was yet another mass shooting yesterday at Seattle Pacific University. The gunman is in custody after he injured three and killed one at the Christian university. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of all involved.
Today is the 70th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion that liberated Europe. Leaders from around the world (including Pope Francis) issued statements and salutes for the invasion that was the beginning of the end of WWII. At one event, President Obama and President Putin came face-to-face for the first time since Russia invaded Ukraine.
In other world news, Sister Cristina, the young sister who took the world by storm a couple of months ago in her blind audition on Italy’s The Voice, won the whole shebang. If you need a good afternoon pick-me-up, watch her singing “Living on a prayer.”
For a few quicktakes, maternal mortality is on the rise in the United States, putting us far out of the company of most of the developed world.
In a study from the University of Southern California, researchers found a strong suggestion that Voter ID laws are discriminatory.
New Jersey is trying out a new defense for the archdiocese, by claiming that sexual abuse that happened while the priest was “not on duty”… shouldn’t count?
One of Pope Francis’ top advisors has caused some controversy by suggesting that libertarianism and Catholicism just don’t mix well.
And now for your rapid fire papal roundup.
This week, Pope Francis:
- Told couples to have children, not pets.
- Continues to gain praise for Middle East peace talks.
- Received letters from young prisoners in the U.S.
- Fired everybody.
And that’s it for now. Go outside and enjoy the fact that it is June. And be sure to take our survey about sin. This will be your last chance!
